NYC Legionnaires Outbreak Rises to 73 Cases

The outbreak of legionnaires disease in Central Harlem has grown to 73 infections, an increase of 15 cases since Monday. Legionnaires is a bacterial disease that develops when people are exposed to water vapor contaminated with Legionella bacteria. New York City health officials identified 11 cooling towers for air conditions systems as the source of the outbreak. Residents breathed in the contaminated air, leading to at least 24 hospitalizations and 3 deaths.

“Flesh-Eating Bacteria” Kills 5th Person in Florida This Year

A “flesh-eating” bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus has now killed 5 people in Florida this year, according to the state’s Department of Health. The state has recorded 16 vibrio infections in 2025. The bacteria usually shows up in warm, brackish water and raw/undercooked seafood. Infections can occur when an open wound is exposed to such water or when a person consumes contaminated seafood. The Florida Department of Health has not publicly shared the source of any of the infections.

Vibrio typically doesn’t cause serious illness. However, if left untreated, the infection can lead to necrotizing fasciitis: the rapid deterioration of tissue beneath the skin, and ultimately death of the patient.
