Legionnaires Outbreak Grows to 67 People, With 3 Now Dead
The legionnaires disease outbreak that began last week in New York City has grown to 67 cases, up from the 22 infections reported last week. Two more people have died since the last update as well. The infections are clustered in Central Harlem.
City health officials say that they have completed repairs on the contaminated cooling towers identified as the cause of the outbreak. Legionnaires can grow in plumbing systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, humidifiers, hot water tanks and evaporative condensers for large air-conditioning systems.
The disease is not spread from person to person. Rather, people can develop infections by breathing in water vapor contaminated with Legionella bacteria. If diagnosed early, infections can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
