Climate Change is Fueling a Rise in Tick-Borne Infection, Research Shows
A dangerous illness called Babesiosis is on the rise, and studies show climate change is largely to blame. Babesiosis is a disease that can develop when an infected tick bites a person. A new article published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases show that tick season has expanded dramatically in New England since the 1980s. Warming temperatures have expanded tick’s range and accelerated their life cycles, allowing the insects to thrive beyond the summer season.
Babesiosis is spread mainly by blacklegged ticks. Although not everyone infected will develop symptoms, many individuals will suffer flu-like symptoms. If left untreated, the infection can lead to even more severe complications such as hemolytic anemia.
