New Jersey Resident Infected with Malaria
A person from New Jersey has developed a malaria infection. The Morris County resident has no history of international travel, which means it is likely a locally acquired infection. Locally acquired means that the patient was bitten by a mosquito in NJ, not internationally. If confirmed by the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) it would be the first locally acquired malaria case in NJ since 1991. Health officials stressed that although Anopheles mosquitoes that can spread malaria live in New Jersey, the risk to the general public remains low. Still, NJDOH advised residents to take preventive measures like clearing standing water near their homes, which are breeding grounds for mosquitos.

First At-Home Flu Vaccine Now Available in the US
The FDA approved the United States’s first at-home flu vaccine, a nasal spray called FluMist. FluMist was first approved in 2003 to be given by healthcare providers only in healthcare settings. Now, many Americans will be able to self-administer the vaccine at-home. This fall, people in 34 states will have access to the at-home nasal spray through a service called FluMist Home. FluMist will be shipped directly to patients’ home.
