Bacterial Meningitis Spreading Among Gaza Children Amid Unlivable Conditions

Bacterial meningitis cases are rising in Gaza as the territory continues to experience poor sanitation, malnutrition and a decimated healthcare system. More than 21 months into the war between Israel and Hamas, the population faces a heightened risk of infectious diseases, including both types of meningitis (viral and bacterial). “There is no space in the hospitals,” said Dr. Mohammed Abu Mughaisib, deputy medical coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. “There is no space to isolate.” The Nasser hospital in Khan Younis confirmed almost 40 new cases of meningitis last week. These numbers likely represent a severe undercount of cases due to the lack of diagnostic supplies.

Measles Cases Reported in New Jersey, Kansas, and North Dakota

New measles cases have been confirmed in New Jersey, Kansas and North Dakota, state health departments announced last week. Kansas reported four infections, all of which are connected to the ongoing outbreak. Kansas now has 87 cases for 2025. North Dakota reported on additional cases, increasing the state’s total to 35 infections since May. In New Jersey, state health officials confirmed an infection of a person in Ocean County. The state does not have an active outbreak as this is the only known case currently. Health authorities are working with local and county partners to investigate the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus.
