Measles Outbreaks Cases Continue to Mount Across US, Canada

Measles continues to surge in the US, as the CDC reported 80 more cases this week, keeping the country on track for the most measles cases since the year 2000. That year, the US earned its measles elimination status, an achievement which the US remains at risk of losing in 2025. Measles elimination for a country means that there are no domestically transmitted measles infections for at least 12 consecutive months. With this week’s update, the United States has confirmed 1,168 infections this year. The vast majority of states (34) have reported cases this year.

Canada has suffered even larger outbreaks in 2025 sparked by undervaccinated populations in the southwest region portion Ontario. Canadian health officials announced 244 additional infections last week, bringing the national total to 2,755, 2,000 of which are in Ontario. On Thursday, the province’s health authorities reported Canada’s first measles death of 2025. The patient was a premature infant whose mother was not vaccinated against the virus.
