Wildfires May Lead to More Respiratory Infections, Study FInds

According to a new study, increasing wildfires may indirectly causes more respiratory infections such as flu and COVID-19. As climate change increases the frequency and severity of wildfires, people are spending more time indoors, the researchers found. The study’s model showed that this additional time congregating indoors increased the incidence of infectious diseases. The scientists said that these findings demonstrate the “urgent need to address the secondary effects of climate change on public health.”

Testing Reveals High Rates of Bacterial Contamination in Meat Supply

According to an examination of FDA data, More than one-third of meat samples had at least one kind of potentially dangerous bacteria. Almost 1 out of 4 of these bacteria were identified as multidrug-resistant, meaning they are not responsive to many antibiotics. “Meat can become contaminated with these bacteria at several points during the production process—most often during slaughter, handling, or packaging,” the report states.
