Contaminated Cucumbers Sicken 45 People, Hospitalizing 16

Cucumbers contaminated with salmonella bacteria have sickened at least 45 people, 16 of whom have been hospitalized. The true number of infections is likely much higher, health officials say, because many cases of foodborne illness typically go unreported. The whole cucumbers were distributed to stores, hospitals, cruise ships and restaurants throughout the US. In addition to the whole cucumbers, multiple companies have recalled items containing the cucumbers such as salads, sandwiches and veggie rolls.

Tainted Tomatoes Recalled as FDA Warns of Health Risks

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) upgraded the recall of tomatoes to a Class 1 recall, the highest warning level possible. The recall which began in late April, was prompted by tests detecting the presence of salmonella bacteria. A class I recall indicates a reasonable likelihood that the item leads to “serious adverse health consequences or death”.

The tomatoes were distributed under the H&C Farms brand in various-sized packages from April 23-28. Initially the tomatoes were voluntarily recalled by the packing company Williams Farms Repack, LLC in May. Since then, health officials report that the risk of illness has grown. Although consumer are very unlikely to still see tomatoes at any food businesses, salmonella can survive for multiple weeks in dry environments and even longer in wet or frozen conditions.
