Task Force Advises All Pregnant Individuals to Get Screened for Syphilis as Early as Possible
As syphilis infections continue to rise across the country, the US Preventive Services Task Force shared its recommendation that all women receive screening for syphilis infection early on in their pregnancy. “All pregnant women should be tested for syphilis when they first present to care”, the Task Force’s recommendation said. “Screening for syphilis should occur as early in pregnancy as possible. If early testing is not done, testing should occur at the first opportunity, which could be as late as at admission for delivery”. The announcement comes amid a surge of syphilis infections. The rate of congenital syphilis is now 10 times greater than a decade ago. Congenital syphilis may lead to serious health problems for the infant such as loss of vision or hearing, optic nerve damage, developmental delays, an enlarged liver, and skeletal abnormalities.
