Avian Flu Sickens Over 4 Million Birds, Threatening Farms Across the US

Avian flu, also known as bird flu, has sickened 4.88 millions birds in the past 30 days, continuing a cycle of outbreaks that began in 2022. In the last month, the virus has affected poultry and egg-laying hens in 59 farms and backyard flocks, from Lancaster County, PA to Weld County, Colorado, and beyond. In Pennsylvania, the virus recently sickened 790,000 chickens in Lancaster County farms as well as 500 animals at live bird markets in Philadelphia. Nationwide, the outbreaks hit 40 backyard flocks and 19 commercials flocks.

Measles Hospitalizing Children and Adults as Outbreaks Grow

Measles continues to spread in South Carolina, sickening 876 people so far. State health officials confirmed that the virus has hospitalized 19 people for serious complications such as brain swelling and pneumonia. Some of these hospitalized individuals are children. People under 18 years old account for approximately 90% of the state’s total measles cases.
