US Surpasses 2,000 Measles Cases in Historically Bad Year

The US surged past 2,000 measles cases in what has been the country’s worst year for measles in over 3 decades. The CDC has confirmed 2,012 measles infections this year as outbreaks in Arizona and South Carolina remain active. The ongoing viral spread puts the US perilously close to losing its measles elimination status, a hard-earned public health victory achieved in 2000. The country will likely lose thus designation in January, which would mark 12 straight months of measles spreading domestically. A long-term decline in vaccination rates have fueled the virus’s resurgence and leaves more and more kids vulnerable to the dangerous disease.

Bacterial Contamination Prompts Ground Beef Recall

Over 2,800 pounds of ground beef were recalled due to possible bacterial contamination. Mountain West Food Group recalled certain ground beef products sold in 6 states after tests revealed the presence of E. coli bacteria. The tests, conducted by government food safety inspectors, found a type of E. coli which can lead to food poisoning symptoms. The recalled items are packaged with labels that include the “Forward Farms” brand.
