Avian Flu Strikes More Poultry Farms and Backyard Flocks

Avian flu (also known as bird flu) activity continues to surge in poultry flocks throughout the US. This week, health officials confirmed outbreaks in several states, including Indiana, Oregon, Oklahoma and Washington. In the last month alone, bird flu has decimated 83 flocks, impacting a total of 1.82 million birds.

Measles Outbreaks Expand as US Moves Closer to Losing Measles Elimination Status

Two major measles outbreaks continue to grow. Utah confirmed 10 more cases this week, raising the state’s total to 84 this year. South Carolina reported 5 additional infections, bringing the state’s total to 52 cases. The CDC confirmed today that the US is at risk of losing its measles elimation status in January. A key criteria of measles elimination status is not having sustained spread of the same measles strain for 12 consecutive months. Although Texas measles outbreak that started in January 2025 ended in August, the strain responsible for these infections sparked the other outbreaks currently affecting other states. If these current outbreaks continue into January 2026 (i.e., 12 months of sustained spread), the US will likely lose its measles elimination status.
