Avian Flu Activity Surges Across the US

Avian flu (also known as bird flu) activity has spiked over the last month. Health officials have confirmed outbreaks in 38 bird flocks – 24 at commercial commercial facilities and 14 in backyards. In total, these outbreaks involved more than 4.4 million birds. In the last 7 days alone, the virus hit 5 commercial farms and 6 backyard flocks.

Avian Flu Can Last Up to 6 months in Raw Milk Cheese

Live Avian flu virus can last for 6 months in raw milk cheese, a new study found. Infectious Avian flu can survive in cheese made from raw milk well beyond a 120 day-aging period. This finding may have health implications as regulations require raw-milk cheese to be aged for just 60 days before it can be sold.
