Contaminated Meat Tied to 1 in 5 UTIs
Meat contaminated with E. coli bacteria is the source of nearly 20% of urinary tract infections (UTIs), according to a new study. Specifically, the bacteria was most likely to come from turkey, chicken, pork or beef. The E. coli can enter the body when you touch or eat a tainted meat product. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to prevent infection, including washing your hands with soap and water while cooking and separating raw meats from each other as well as other ingredients.
“The bladder is a major gateway to the bloodstream for E. coli. And when you get these E. coli in your blood, they can kill you,” said Dr. Lance Price, the study’s lead researcher.
