Measles Outbreaks Grow in Arizona and South Carolina

The two largest active outbreaks in the US continue to grow, as South Carolina and Arizona reported new cases today. South Carolina reported 26 additional cases today while Arizona announced 9 new infections. South Carolina and Arizona each have 214 confirmed cases in their ongoing outbreaks. The United States’ measles elimination status remains at risk because of the continued spread of measles in these states and across the country.

The percentage of toddlers who received their measles, mumps rubella (MMR) shot on time has declined since the start of COVID-19, according to a new study. Specifically, the proportion of 2-year-olds who got their MMR vaccine on schedule dropped from 80% in 2021 to 77% in 2024. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that kids receive their first dose between 12-15 months old and their second shot between 4-6 years of age. Studies demonstrate that, to keep the virus under control, at least 95% of children must receive two doses on schedule. Large pockets of under-vaccination have led to the resurgence of measles in recent years. In 2025, the US confirmed the most cases in 3 decades.
