FDA To Test Raw Milk’s Cheese for Bird Flu, as Virus Continues to Spread
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin tests for bird flu on cheese made from raw cow’s milk. Earlier this year, tests on raw cow’s milk has revealed very high levels of bird flu, also known as Avian flu. The FDA is now expanding the its testing program to include cheese products made from raw (unpasteurized) cow’s milk. The samples will be taken from warehouses and distribution centers, rather than retail stores, throughout the US. Outbreaks continues to spread uncontrolled in dairy herds and poultry flocks across the country. All 50 states have reported outbreaks. To date, 66 human cases have been confirmed in the US. Most people infected have experienced mild symptoms, while two have been hospitalized with severe disease.
Avian Flu Detected on French and German Poultry Farms
France has reported Avian Flu outbreaks in two poultry flocks, health authorities announced. The virus has been detected throughout Europe in a recent wave connected to migratory birds. The European outbreaks are not bad as the outbreaks happening in the US, where Avian flu has caused egg prices have reached all-time highs and the virus has spread to cow herds and people.
