South Carolina Measles Outbreaks Now the Biggest in 25 Years

The South Carolina measles outbreak shows no signs of slowing down, as health officials have confirmed 600 infections in the last month alone. The state has recorded 789 cases since September (including 18 hospitalizations), surpassing Texas as the biggest hotspot in the past year. South Carolina now has the biggest outbreak since 2000, the year the US earned measles elimination status.

There are currently 557 other people in quarantine because they were potentially exposed to measles and lack immunity, according to the state health department. Additional infections in North Carolina, California and Washington have been tied to the South Carolina outbreak. The US will likely lose its measles elimination status after January.
