The measles outbreak in South Carolina has expanded to 979 cases. It is the largest outbreak since 1992. The growth rate may be slowing as the state health department reported just 6 cases today. It is the first time since last month that the Department of Public Health confirmed less than 10 new cases.
Like other measles clusters throughout the country, South Carolina’s outbreak is fueled by large pockets under-vaccination. According to state health officials, 913 out of 979 cases are people who are not unvaccinated. The virus has hospitalized at least 20 individuals
