Federal health officials have tied two salmonella outbreaks to contaminated food products. All of the products identified so far by FDA investigations have been recalled.
The first set of illnesses is tied to dubai chocolate produced by Turkish company Emek Gida. Specifically, Emek’s jarred pistachio-cocoa spread was found to contain salmonella bacteria. This outbreak has led to 4 known cases, including one hospitalization.
The second outbreak is linked to frozen sprouted beans. Chetak LLC Group recalled two products due to salmonella risk: Deep brand frozen sprouted moong (mung) beans and frozen sprouted moth (mat) beans. To date 11 people have been infected and four have been hospitalized.
Symptoms of Salmonella can include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps and dehydration. The majority of those infected get better in a week or less. However, the bacteria can more severe illness, particularly in higher risk groups such as older adults, small children, those with weakened immune systems.
