A cat food product was recalled due to Avian flu (bird flu) contamination. Two cats became sick, and died, from eating Wild Coast Raw Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula. The domestic cats, who lived in Oregon, belonged to two different households. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the live virus in both the cats and unopened packages of the food. Therefore, Wild Coast recalled their Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula with the following lot numbers: #22660 and #22664.
Wild Coast is not the first raw cat food brand to recall products because of Avian Flu contamination. In December, Northwest Naturals recalled a batch of its Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen recipe after a cat died from eating it. Cats have also died from drinking raw milk in recent months. Two cats in California died after consuming Raw Farms milk which was recalled due to the presence of bird flu.
Cats are particularly vulnerable to Avian Flu, which they can be exposed to from ingesting raw meat or unpasteurized milk. While dogs can also become sick from bird flu, they tend to experience less severe symptoms. This could change as the virus continues to mutate. While the US has not confirmed any canine cases to date, other countries have reported bird flu deaths in dogs.
