An mRNA flu shot was more effective than a currently available flu shot in a large human trial. Over 18,000 adults participated in the late stage study during the 2022–2023 flu season. Some participants got the Pfizer mRNA flu vaccine and other individuals received an existing flu shot called Fluzone. Individuals who received the mRNA flu shot experienced 34.5% fewer flu-like illnesses compared to people who received Fluzone.
A small percentage of people experienced mostly mild side effects from both shots, although these symptoms were more common with those who received the mRNA vaccine. For example, 5.6% of mRNA vaccine recipients had a fever, while 1.7% of people receiving FluZone reported a fever. Most side effects were mild and disappeared within 1-2 days,
