Mpox Outbreak Grows in Guinea, other West African Countries

Mpox outbreaks are spreading in multiple West African countries. Currently, Guinea is experiencing a particularly bad outbreak, as cases are rising is escalating exponentially. Guinea, which confirmed its first infection just 5 weeks ago, accounted for 20% of mpox cases on the continent of Africa last week. Vaccines are key to controlling mpox, but supplies have been totally depleted in the region. Neither the affected countries nor their non-profit partners have money available to purchasing and distribute more vaccines, in part due to recent cuts in global health funding. Africa Centers for Disease Control calculated that 3.4 million doses are required to curb the mpox outbreaks. The region has fallen well short of reaching this critical threshold.
