Two pet cats in California died from drinking raw milk that was contaminated with Avian Flu (bird flu). The indoor cats consumed milk produced by Raw Farm, which had all of its products recalled after the live virus was found in retail samples. The cats were not fed raw cat food nor were they exposed to other potential sources of bird flu such as infected birds, according to their owner.

Since the beginning of last month, almost a dozen domesticated cats in the state have passed away from drinking unpasteurized milk or raw cat food tainted with Avian flu. These fatalities coincide with an ongoing outbreak of the Avian flu among dairy herds, 80% of which are located in California. Experts strongly advise people against drinking raw milk or giving it to their pets due to the risk for Avian flu as well as other infections.
