Measles Regaining Foothold in the US, Threatening to Reverse Decades of Progress

Viral disease. Measles rash on the body of the child. Allergy.

Just over 3 months into 2025, the US has already had the same number of measles deaths it saw in the last 25 years combined. Last week, an unvaccinated 8-year-old girl in Texas, who was healthy before getting sick, died from her measles infection.

As the US soars past 600 cases for 2025 (2 times as many cases as all of 2024) experts warn that we may have returned to days when measles deaths were much more common. Epidemiologists project that the US will probably exceed the 1,274 infections recorded in 2019, when the country barely missed losing its measles elimination status.
