A baby in Alberta, Canada died after losing the battle with their measles infection, the country’s second pediatric measles death this year. The pregnant mother became infected first and passed on the virus to the infant in the womb. The baby was born prematurely and subsequently died. The province has confirmed 1,914 measles infections since March, 89% of which have involved unvaccinated kids. Measles has surged across the North American continent this year, but Canada has been hit especially hard 4,646 cases.
Measles activity continues throughout the United States. South Carolina is among the latest states to experience an outbreak, with 5 patients suffering infections in the last month alone. The US has confirmed 1,544 cases in 2025 in what has been a historically bad year for the virus.
