Justin Timberlake has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, the singer revealed. Timberlake shared that the illness has caused fatigue, nerve pain and other issues on his latest tour. Lyme disease can develop when a person is bitten by a tick infected with a borrelia bacteria.

The condition can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other illnesses. If not treated early, Lyme can lead to complications. Like many patients with Lyme, Timberlake felt “relentlessly debilitated, both mentally and physically.” The pop star added, “When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness”.

Common symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, rashes, headaches, extreme fatigue, muscle aches and joint stiffness.

Approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease, according to the CDC. Cases have trended upward in recent years due to climate change, which has allowed ticks to stay active longer and in new regions.
