Flu Vaccine May Cut Risk of Severe Illness in Half This Year

The flu shot could reduce the risk of severe illness by about 50% this flu season, new data indicates. Each year, public health scientists (epidemiologists) look to data from the Southern Hemisphere’s winter as a “preview” of what we might expect during Northern Hemisphere’s flu season.

Analyses of 2025 data suggests that the vaccine could lower the rate of flu infections requiring medical care by about 50 percent. The CDC recommends the flu shot for everyone 6 months old and up.
