Flu activity is surging throughout the United States. New Jersey and 13 other states are experiencing “high” or “very high” levels of flu-like illness. Eight other states are reporting “moderate” flu activity. The virus has killed 3 kids so far this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the US has had at least 4.6 million infections, 49,000 hospitalizations, and total 1,900 deaths from flu to date this season.
The CDC recommends that every person 6 months and older receive the flu shot as soon as possible. This year is likely to the second bad flu season in a row, according to analyses from scientists who study the spread of disease. In addition to vaccination, you can minimize the spread of flu by staying home when sick, wearing a mask, and washing your hands.
