Florida and South Carolina Measles Outbreaks Grow

The measles outbreak in South Carolina continues to grow, with health officials reporting 13 new cases. South Carolina, which now has 933 confirmed infections, is the epicenter of the largest measles outbreak in over three decades. More than 98% of the people with confirmed infections were unvaccinated against the virus. More than 2 out every 3 cases in the state have been in kids between 5-17 years old. Children younger than 5 years old account for 28% of the cases.

In Florida, the outbreak centering around Ave Maria University has expanded to 54 cases. The latest data updates are being provided by the university and local media, not from official state health department reports, as the department of health communications have lagged significantly. Florida currently has the fifth highest case count of among US states in 2026.
