FDA Issues Guidance on Raw Pet Foods Amid Bird Flu Deaths

Recently, a number of cats have died from eating raw pet food or milk contaminated with Avian Flu, also known as bird flu. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a guidance asking to manufacturers to take additional measures to ensure the safety of their products. The federal agency asked companies to source ingredients only from healthy animals and to take steps to kill any viruses, such as heat treatment of the food.

Health officials also advised pet owners to take certain safety measures to reduce the risk of bird flu infections such as cooking raw food. Th virus is dangerous to cats and dogs. Cases in domestic and wild cats have been detected in multiple states, including California, Colorado, Washington and Oregon.
