The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a cheese recall to “Class 1”, the highest risk level possible, after testing confirmed contamination by Listeria bacteria. Listeria is a potentially life threatening bacteria. Each year, approximately 172 Americans die from listeria infections.
The bacteria was detected in cheese produced in a New Jersey plant run by The Ambriola Company. The cheese was sold under many labels, such as Boar’s Head and Member’s Mark. The recall applies to large bags intended for food service operations as well as individual consumer sizes sold in retail stores.
To date, no illnesses linked to the tainted products have been reported to the FDA. Anyone who has a contaminated product is advised not to eat it, and to throw it away immediately.
