COVID-19 Availability May Be Limited After Federal Rule Changes

CVS and Walgreens announced they are limiting the availability of COVID vaccines in response to changes in federal policy changes. Under the direction of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the CDC no longer recommends the vaccine for people of certain age groups and health statuses. RFK Jr. also delayed the meeting of a key vaccine advisory panel whose formal recommendation affects where vaccines are available and whether insurers are required to cover it. Jr.

CVS announced, in compliance with state laws, that they will offer COVID-19 vaccines in 34 states without a prescription. In 16 other states, consumers will face restrictions, such as the need to receive a prescription from a healthcare provider. This is because certain states require the CDC’s vaccine advisory committee (ACIP) to recommend any vaccine that is offered without a prescription. In Nevada, New Mexico and Massachusetts the drug store chain says they can not provide the vaccines even with a prescription because of state local laws.

Similarly, Walgreens announced it will comply with state laws rules, announcing that it is “prepared to offer the vaccine in states where we are able to do so.”

The FDA also revoked emergency authorization for all COVID vaccines, which means Moderna’s vaccine is now the only COVID shot approved for kids age 6 months to 4 years of age who have one or more qualifying health conditions.
