Great Value Cottage Cheese sold at Walmart was recalled because the product may not have been properly pasteurized. The manufacturer, Saputo Cheese USA Inc., may have failed to fully pasteurize some of the dairy ingredients, which raises the risk of bacterial contamination. Testing performed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture revealed the issue, prompting the recall of three types of Great Value Cottage Cheese sold in 24 states.
Pasteurization is a crucial food safety process which kills harmful germs by heating raw dairy to high temperatures. Unpasteurized products can contain dangerous viruses and bacteria such as Salmonella, Avian Flu, E. coli, Campylobacter and Listeria.
Customers who bought the affected batches cottage cheese should avoid eating it. Health officials recommend throwing it away or returning to the store for a refund.
