AI Tool Could Help Prevent Sepsis In Kids

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition hospitalizing over 75,000 children every year. Early treatment for sepsis is critical. Yet doctors have no tools available to predict sepsis in kids who show up at the emergency room. A promising new artificial intelligence (AI) model could aid ER doctors in identifying kids at risk for sepsis. The AI model, trained on 1.6 million medical records, identified children at risk of developing sepsis within the next 48 hours.

“These models showed robust balance in identifying children in the ED who will later develop sepsis, without overidentifying those who are not at risk,” said the study’s lead researcher Dr. Elizabeth Alpern, division head of emergency medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. “This is very important because we want to avoid aggressive treatment for children who don’t need it.”
