Forty-three people (38 passengers and 5 crew members) have fallen ill on a Silversea cruise, experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms. The primary symptoms reported are abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The cause of the illness is not yet known, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation is ongoing. According to the CDC, Silversea instituted safety measures in response to the outbreak such as isolating sick people and enhanced sanitation protocols.

This outbreak is the second incident of 2025 involving gastrointestinal illness on a cruise. The first outbreak sickened 28 crew members on a Sea Cloud ship. They suffered from suspected ciguatera poisoning. Ciguatera is caused by consuming fish tainted containing toxin chemicals from algae found near coral reefs.

In 2024, the CDC recorded a total of 18 outbreaks on cruise ships, most of which were caused by norovirus.
